SAFE SEARCH PROCEDURES TO PREVENT SNAKE BITE
Snakes are a part of our lives regardless of whether we like it or not. We can bury our heads in the sand or we can use knowledge as power. We can ensure that any encounter with a snake is controlled by us and not the snake, our actions will determine if everyone remains safe or not. In this following page I will describe step by step procedures on how to look under items prior to their removal. The importance of this is that you don't want to pick up something the wrong way and startling a snake who will defend himself and strike.
Things like tiles should be searched individually, you should use a hook or rake to turn over each tile and looking underneath it. Always lift the furthest side away from you so the tile protects you from the hiding visitor.
Make sure you stand to one side to allow the snake an exit (SEE HOOK @ TOP OF TILE) with an exit the snake will not feel cornered and this will see him try to escape and hide again.
Note the use of the hook to lift and look under things like shade cloth and other items. Make sure you always extend your arm and stand as far away as possible. This will also enable the snake to escape without perceiving you as a threat.
Before just lifting items make sure you sneak a peek first. Once safety has been assured then remove items individually.
Place your foot against the edge (Of tin or fencing) closest to you and use a hook to lift the edge on the other side pulling the item against your legs (PICTURED ABOVE) this will prevent the snake biting you.
Please note the leg covers which I am wearing, They are Chain Saw Chaps and would be recommended you buy some if you are in a high snake area. I use tongs for snake removal because their quick and effective without harming the snake.
I do handle snakes when safe to do so and each removal is carried out with safety being the highest priority. Please remember only licensed Reptile Removalists can handle Venomous snakes.
